I wonder if you saw the pictures of that wonderful ancient turtle from the Galapagos Islands which was on television this last week. He’s the last of his kind. With his death his species will become extinct. I felt really sorry. Such has been the pressure of tourists and climate change that one of our fellow creatures, a special part of God’s creation, is coming to an end.
Today is Creation Sunday. You can be forgiven for not knowing. In the alternative service book, which some of us do remember, Creation was given special proper recognition on the 9th Sunday before Advent, which in the calendar of that book was the very beginning of the Christian year. In Common Worship, however, the celebration of Creation has been relegated to the second Sunday before Lent. I am sorry about that because Creation is where our faith begins. We believe that this beautiful world was not just an accident. There is plenty of evidence of order, pattern and beauty which all points to an intelligent design. That is to say to the fact that this world is created and it is good and it is loved. Furthermore, we human beings are part of that grand design and have been given responsibility for this world, which is our earthly home. That is the message of Genesis. And I do believe myself that this belief is entirely compatible with Darwin’s Theory of evolution. Which is to say that all the species of plants and animals have evolved over millions of years...
