Reepham Benefice

Have you ever had that experience of running out of something important, at a social occasion? I remember at least once, perhaps more than once, when in our Benefice in Thetford we used to, in the spring, get all the PCCs together and have a bit of a party in our Rectory. On occasions, when the red was running a bit low, I would slip out to the Off licence surreptitiously and grab a bit more before hopefully nobody that it had happened. Something like that occurred at this wedding that Jesus and his disciples were invited to. The changing of the water into wine is the earliest miracle recorded in St John’s gospel and is considered a sign. St John’s gospel is the only place where you find sings of that kind and Jesus seems to want, by doing things, to convey certain truths to his disciples.
So here we have this wedding going on - Jesus seems to be a friend of the family, Mary does at least because Mary does seem to have some particular position. If you have a family wedding, or a big do like that, you can sometimes out of your depth. Now if that has happened, there’s usually a neighbour, usually a woman who can be very helpful and is always on hand to fill in things you have forgotten. That seems to be what Mary was doing there.
